Holiday Soundtrack

Hobby Lobby has Christmas things 50% off and the radio starts playing Christmas jams well before Thanksgiving, but Mr. Heid has a rule that we can’t purchase Christmas things, decorate for the holiday, or listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving is over. Don’t tell him, but I sometimes sneak a few songs in.

The moment Thanksgiving is over, I fill our house, my car, and my office with Christmas music every day! I do worry, though, that I’ll overplay some of the music and get really tired of it by the time Christmas Day actually rolls around. To avoid this, I’ve created a few different lists that I rotate through.

Deck the Halls — This list has ev.ery.thing festive to ring in the holiday season.

Deck the Halls | Chill Christmas — A low-key holiday playlist perfect for an intimate gathering — no highs and lows, all steady.

Deck the Halls | Classics — Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Burl Ives, Bing Crosby… you get the idea.

Deck the Halls | Instrumental — All instrumentals! Best paired with wassail, a cozy fire, and holiday wrapping.

Deck the Halls | Keira’s Favorites — All of my favorites so that I don’t miss out on hearing those during the season (because there are so. many. Christmas. songs out there!)

Deck the Halls | Punk — For when you really just wanna skank through the holidays! This is work-in-progress, so if you have any songs for this playlist, send them my way!

Whatever you need a Christmas playlist for, I hope one of these works or inspires you to build your own!

Cheers,

K

Cheesy Halloween Round Three

It’s one of my favorite times of the year — Halloween! As usual, I have another round of cheesy horror flicks for you. Check ‘em out!

gsd_cheesyspookymovies003-sq.jpg
  • DANCE OF THE DEAD | It’s prom night and zombies are on the prowl! But have no fear — there are kids who couldn’t get dates, and they’ve got nothing better to do than to save the student body!

  • THE DEAD DON’T DIE | I honestly don’t even know what to say about this movie. Bill Murray and Adam Driver make an unlikely police duo in a small town that’s being taken over by zombies. They break the fourth wall several times, and it’s a damn treat every time.

  • EVIL DEAD | Five friends take a weekend getaway in an old cabin in the woods, and so many terrible decisions ensue. As usual, the 80s win with their cheesy horror makeup. I think what I love most about this movie is that for one of my senior photos, I wore the same outfit as Ash’s girlfriend — yikes!

  • LITTLE MONSTERS (2019) | Can a class of kindergarteners survive a zombie outbreak? I guess you’ll have to watch this Hulu Original to find out! Perhaps the sunniest zombie movie I’ve ever seen.

  • BURYING THE EX | This guy is on the verge of dumping his girlfriend when she dies. While he’s moved on, she’s returned to life and won’t let go.

  • THE MONSTER SQUAD | This movie feels a little like The Goonies — a band of unlikely heroes (aka nerdy kids) have to save their town from classic monsters.

  • THE BABYSITTER (2017) | Need a babysitter? Just hire the blonde down the street! Your kid will be attracted to his hot sitter, stay up to spy on her and her friends, learn that they’re part of a satanic cult, and spend the evening trying not to be murdered. But it’s all good, because the cult kids are high schoolers and dumb AF. Also, Netflix is releasing the sequel this year, so that’s definitely happening.

Want more? Check out Round 1 and Round 2!

We're Expecting!

Just popping on to this platform to announce that Mr. Heid and I are having a baby! We are beyond excited, but with everything going on and navigating this chapter, I’ve definitely neglected this little corner of my world.

I’ll be back to share about my first trimester, pregnancy during a pandemic, our nursery ideas, and some maternity favorites so far — maybe all in one post, maybe in separate posts — we’ll see!

Stay tuned!

Friday Five.

gsd_keiko_021420.jpg

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KEIKO | Guys, it’s my puppy-doge’s 5th birthday today! She leaves things in our house alone, but she is a beast when it comes to toys. She can chew through a “tough” toy (haha ha ha ha hahaha) in less than a day and a simple one in two minutes flat. Needless to say, her bin-o-toys is full of carcasses, unwound chew ropes, and bone nubs. So for her birthday, we’re clearing out her basket and filling it with ten brand new toys! Hopefully, it’ll take her at least some time to get into them all.

GALENTINE’S DAY | I celebrated my first Galentine’s Day this year! I got my local ladies together for brunch this past Sunday and it was so nice to chill and catch up. I think I’ll try to make it a tradition. Also, if you’re from Greenville, enjoy these hilarious local pickup lines from GVLToday readers.

gsd_asparagusbread_021420.jpg

EAT YOUR VEGGIES | I spotted the perfect bunch of asparagus at Harris Teeter the other day — Mr. Heid and I like the really thin ones — so I looked up a simple recipe on Pinterest, made plans, and scooped them up. So I’ve been eating this for lunch all week and it. is. divine. So healthy, so clean, so tasty. You gotta like peas though… I also made mine on HT’s harvest grain bread. YUM!

NOT READING, BUT MIGHT | We still haven’t finished Infinity Train because we binged The Witcher and Locke & Key! I’ve never read either of them, but the trailers and descriptions looked promising and they did not disappoint. I’m ready for their second seasons! Also, I’m loving one of the characters’ names — Bode (pronounced Bo-dee) — how cool does that sound?

gsd_snow_021420.jpg

HEY, SC — YOUR CRAZY IS SHOWING! | I don’t know about the weather where you are, but here in South Carolina we had 70-degrees and sunny, flash flood and tornado warnings, super cold with a day of snow, and rainy in mid-60s days all in one week. Thankfully that was last week, and this week has been a little more chill. But my allergies are going haywire.

How’d your week stack up?

Cheesy Halloween Round Two

If you haven’t been watching Halloween movies every day of October, it’s time to get started! Hate scary movies? I’ve got another roundup of cheesy horror movies for ya!

gsd_cheesyspookymovies002.jpg
  • THE FINAL GIRLS | A teenage girl loses her once-scream-queen movie star mom in an accident. Flash forward and she, along with a group of her peers, are driven into the world of a campy 80s horror film featuring her late mother. They join forces in an attempt to take down the killer, who *buh buh buuuuuh* is real!

  • FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) | This kid’s new neighbor is a charming and attractive… vampire (!), and it’s up to him to take him down. Real 80s cheesy costumes and makeup make it a lot easier to brush off the demons as silly instead of scary.

  • KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM | A group of besties and live-action role players take to the woods to participate in a re-enactment game similar to Dungeons and Dragons, only something real is wreaking havoc. Sound too cheesy? Maybe the fact that it stars Peter Dinklage will change your mind…

  • ODD THOMAS | First off, Odd can see dead people and uses his gift to help their souls find peace. Secondly, he meets someone who unleashes dark beings into the world that feast on human pain and suffering. Their growth indicates to Odd that something big is coming that could mean the end for all, so he teams up with his girlfriend and the sheriff in an attempt to stop it. This one is daaark, but very good if you’re ready for emotions.

  • STUNG | A garden party is ruined by killer mutated wasps. ’Nuf said, and yes it’s as ridiculous as it sounds.

  • YOGA HOSERS | Two Canadian teens battle evil Nazi sausages. It’s slower moving, but it’s still great. Mr. Heid and I had the pleasure of attending a screening of this where Kevin Smith spoke and held a Q&A.

If you missed the first roundup, you can find it here! Have a spooky October!

Friday Five. | Halloween Edition

gsd_jackolantern19.jpg

#GOALS | This photo is #familygoals and #halloweengoals! I hope to someday have kids, take a photo like this, and put it up in the house as part of our annual Halloween decor.

OOH AHH | Jim McKenzie’s video Friends with Death is Halloween perfection. Turn your sound on and subscribe!

SCI-FI ALERT | Kristian Hammerstad’s pop-gore illustrations are like a throwback to a good cheesy sci-fi or horror flick! Currently this one, this one, and this one are rotating on my desktop.

SHOP TIL YOU DROP | I’m a dog person, but the Beistle Scratch Cat is one of my favorite Halloween symbols and I need these socks! Also, I want this future ghost glow-in-the-dark lapel pin!

THACKERY BINX | Here’s the reason why black cats are associated with Halloween and all things spoOoky…

What has you in the Halloween spirit this month?

xoxo,

K
