Makers Guide | Halloween 2021

BOO! I’ve rounded up my favorite wares from makers for this spoooky makers guide!

My favorite is the Wormy Skull by Jessica McLeod! I stumbled across one of her skulls on Instagram, and then popped over to her shop to find more cuteness — Harold the Pumpkin and Stanley the Ghost are so freakin’ adorable! Sadly, all of her work for the season is sold out, but I’m keeping my eye on Jessica’s shop next year!

I ordered the It’s Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus tee and matching bodysuit for Baby J from Aspen + Company. Hocus Pocus is my all-time favorite Halloween movie — I’ve already played it twice in the background this month, but I’m looking forward to when Baby J and I can put these on and watch it together!

I’m really digging the vintage vibes of the Halloween Fangs print. I’d honestly leave it up all year round. Bonus — it’s currently 40% off!

Everything linked below!

Makers Guide | Yer a Wizard

HAPPEE BIRTHDAE, HARRY!

In honor of Harry Potter’s birthday, I’m interrupting the baby train and sharing a few handmade things for your favorite witch or wizard!

gsd_makersguide006_wizard20.jpg

ONE | I’ve been wanting this “Don’t Let the Muggles Get You Down” keychain for a while now — I just can’t decide what color! I’m torn between marigold and teal…

TWO | You can’t go wrong with a pair of snake earrings for that cunning Slytherin in your life! Velvet Orange Designs offers clay pairs in three different colors!

THREE | Sending out some snail mail? Jazzing up your planner? Grab a roll of Magical Washi Tape from Nutmeg and Arlo! You can go with the holographic roll or you can pick your house colors!

FOUR | Stealing away to the kitchen just got a little more magical with this tea towel.

FIVE | If hitting the books like Hermione is more your speed, check out this glasses bookmark!

SIX | Get comfy and rest assured because this Hogwarts sweater is far from a Mrs. Weasley original.

Makers Guide | Quarantine Edition

Quarantine, Shelter-in-Place, Coronacation… no matter what you’re calling it, the fact is we’re all staying home. For some, staying at home may be easy peasy. But for me, it can be tough. Luckily, I still have work to do for the day job so that keeps me pretty busy. But there’s still a lot of down time and sometimes I just don’t want to work on another house project. Anyone else?

If you’re also wanting something fresh to do, here are some fun items that may get you through the slump!

gsd_makersguide005_quarantine20.jpg

ONE | I know that I personally need to get back into my yoga routine, for both flexibility and to check in and realign with my body. I really need a new mat and this might be just the time to snag one. I’m eyeing the beautiful designs offered by Yeti Yoga — especially loving The Alder Yoga Mat.

TWO | Maybe you’re bored with your usual recipes, maybe you’re always looking for something new, or maybe it’s time to get really creative with what you have left in the pantry — enter Christina Tosi’s cookbook, Milk Bar Life. It’s been out for a few years now, but it’s full of comfort food recipes (like Chicken & Dumplings or Beef Roast), off-the-wall recipes (like the Spaghettios Sammy or Cornbread Ice Cream), and fun stories to boot! Bonus — it’s currently on sale on Amazon.

THREE | In cleaning out our storage room, I was reminded that my friends and I used to elaborately decorate envelopes and mail letters to each other… and yes, we had texting, email, and AIM (HAHA), but there’s something so fun about getting funky envelopes in your mailbox! Get some glue sticks, some envelopes, some stamps, and some of these assorted scrap packs from Yarisi & Co. and go to town!

FOUR | It’s so easy to get caught up in the scariness, loneliness, and negative emotions that come with a pandemic and quarantine, but there are also so many things each of us should be grateful for. Grab a Gratitude Journal from Promptly Journals and begin jotting down those things that bring you comfort and light during these trying times and life in general.

FIVE | This Leafy Wreath embroidery template by Florals and Floss will keep your hands busy and will double as a positive reminder! It’s just a digital download, so you’ll need to get hoops, a needle, and fabric. I get my fabric and needles from JOANN, which is still fulfilling online orders. I use these hoops from Amazon and transfer my fabric to a frame afterward, but you can also use these bamboo hoops if you’re planning to hang the hoop as is.

SIX | And finally, some days it’s all we can do to cope with everything going on. If you’re teaching kids, working in the hospitals, working remotely, bored out of your mind, on your last roll of toilet paper, or simply having a rougher day than you’d like — give yourself an award for simply making it through the day. This Coping Okay Today enamel pin by Clara and Macy sums up my day sometimes and that’s okay.

See you all on the other side of quarantine, because this too shall pass! Sending you wishes for good health!

Makers Guide | Women's Empowerment

We are just 10 days away from International Women’s Day on March 8 — sister’s unite!

Anyone get my School House Rock reference?! If you’re thinking of showering your lady friends in gifts to celebrate International Women’s Day and need some ideas, I’ve put together this gift guide of items that celebrate women and are made by female-owned companies (bonus!).

gsd_makersguide004_women20.jpg

ONE | Let’s stay out of the business of putting others down, mmk?! Grab a Hustle Hard Girl or Girls Support Girls key chain from the ladies at Fresh Water Design Co. so your crew can carry a little reminder with them to never lose sight of their goals (even if they get off track) and to support other girls they encounter along the way.

TWO | Sarah over at Chalk Full of Love has gifting covered with her Girl Power Tees and Girl Power Tumbler! She even has toddler tees and onesies for the tiniest of feminists!

THREE | Why is it that just because we have emotions, like to keep things playful, and have boobs, that people assume we can’t take the business side of things seriously and do a boss job of getting shit done? Maybe they need us to spell it out for them with this Serious Business Woman sweatshirt from Ban.do…

FOUR | Weft + Hide’s Lady Lapel Pin celebrates body positivity — and don’t we all need a little bit of that?!

FIVE | You guys know my love of snail mail… Sydney of Super Creative has this pretty Dang! You’re Amazing card that comes as a single card or a 5-pack — however many ladies you think need this little reminder of how amazeballs they are!

SIX | This Taking Care of Business notepad and this Gettin’ Stuff Done notepad by Jade Fisher are both bright, fun, and subtly display female strength.

As a woman, I’m always celebrating femininity in its various forms, but I’m looking forward to celebrating International Women’s Day with you all in March!

Makers Guide | Fall 2019

I love autumn so much, I can’t handle it! The crisp air, the beautiful colors, the crunch falling leaves… top it off with Mr. Heid’s birthday, our wedding (and soon to be anniversary season), Halloween, and Thanksgiving — UGH! There’s so much to celebrate!

gsd_makersguide003_fall19.jpg

Whether you’re looking for some decor this season, or a gift for someone special, or a treat for yourself, check out this roundup of fall-inspired handmade or small-batch goods!

ONE | I recently purchased CFL’s Fall My Favorite Things Travel Mug, but I’m also eyeing this Give Thanks camper mug. Use it year-round as a reminder that there’s always something to be thankful for.

TWO | I NEED THIS SWEATER! I LOVE HOCUS POCUS!

THREE | Speaking of Hocus Pocus — yup, I need this candle set.

FOUR | I’ve recently become more and more drawn to yellows lately, so naturally this yellow velvet cushion is calling my name.

FIVE | We ordered this cake topper for our wedding and I’m thinking I may use it to make a wreath like this one after the wedding. It’ll be a nice way to reuse it instead of tossing it!

SIX | As I said before, I love autumn (especially October), and I’d gladly have this print on my wall all season long!

SEVEN | I’ve been wanting a pair of slippers for years, so I finally ordered these ones! Don’t they look cozy? I’ll let you know if I love them once they come in! *Update — they’re SO cozy! Highly recommend!*

EIGHT | These petite wood bar earrings are simple yet beautiful! I like the wood look and tried some studs years ago, but since I'm tan it just looked like my ear loves we're shaped funnily 🙈

However and whatever you’re celebrating this season (even if it’s just the season), I hope you take a breath to pause and savor every moment!

Makers Guide | Expectant Moms

I’m at that point in life where many within my circle of friends are getting married (me!) or having babies.

Years back, I was invited to a coworker’s baby shower and she didn’t have a registry. I had no clue what to purchase and asked my mom for advice. She said, “Well, they can never have enough diapers, and no one ever seems to get books for babies.”

I grew up a bookworm — had one wherever I went, read multiple at a time, and had bookmarks in the middle of several on my shelf. Somewhere along the line, I lost time to read for fun (probably thanks to the school system where we were forced to read only books with tragic plot lines). But I believe every kid should learn how to read and have access to as many books as possible, so why shouldn’t we give babies books?!

gsd_makersguide002_baby.jpg

So I put together a gift basket with some books, some essentials, and something adorable (but like, what baby item isn’t adorable).

Since there are so many new babies entering the friend circle, and I LOVE curating gift packages, this seems like the perfect time to share the things I’m eyeing for my new mommy friends out there. In addition to all the books, I’m also loving these handmade, small-shop items:

ONE | This I Believe in Naps Onesie by Chalkfulloflove is too cute. I should take the message to heart and start taking a few power naps myself!

TWO | The Austin Moonstone Teething Necklace from Chewable Charm is practical and fashionable.

THREE | cuddle+kind’s hand-knit dolls, like Avery the Lamb, are adorable and give back meals to those in need. You can also purchase these dolls in bundles (eep! fraaands!!)

FOUR | These cloud bookends by Z Create Design go with practically any theme and hold up all those books that I’ll be gifting.

FIVE | Loving this minimalist Poppyseed Play grey and natural wood baby gym! Now, where do I get that rug?

SIX | Sun and Lace has the most precious little leather shoes. These and these are my faves!

SEVEN | I am almost always down for anything colorblocking, including this blanket by Blabla.

EIGHT | Eeep! I can’t even handle this giraffe rattle from Blabla. They also have an elephant!

NINE | Timber Sprout Toys’ wooden rainbow blocks are so pretty. It can serve as a display while baby’s too little, can be played as a stacking toy while baby’s learning motor skills, and can be separated for more play options as baby gets older.

TEN | This baby book box from Stash + Story gives parents the option to use page packs and/or to add their own pages and documents.

I think I could look at and share baby things aaallll day, but I’ll stop here. Know someone who’s bringing a new tiny human into the world? I’d love to hear what you’re gifting!

xoxo

Makers Guide | Halloween Edition

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend and your week is off to a good start.

My previous blog included a Makers Guide category where I highlighted a few items I’ve been eyeballing from people who make and sell material goods in small batches. Since I’m super excited about Halloween, I’ve put together a spooky guide to get you in the spirit too!

gsd_makersguide001_halloween.jpg

1. I have a slight obsession with skulls and this petite skull ring by Callie Jewelry is too cute!

2. Last year, artist Jared Chapman shared a series of illustrated ghosts over old images and I love the feel of every one!

3. This Trick-or-Treat tote from The Little Market is simple, yet screams fall. Even though I won’t be doing any trick-or-treating myself, I’m sure this bag would be great for apple picking.

4. Eeep! How cute are these pins by Sarah Meredith of Rock Cakes?! They’d be the perfect addition to the beanie my Gramma made me last holiday.

5. Yeti Yoga is changing the name of your favorite yoga pose with this Corpse Pose and Chill mat.

6. While I’m definitely rooting for the good side when I read Harry Potter, I must admit that the Dark Mark is a pretty wicked symbol. I guess it’s because it has a snake and a skull in it, both of which I find beautiful… Anywho, I’m loving this enamel Dark Mark pin by Victoria Jung of Potter Project

What spooky things are you excited about this Halloween?

K
